She was once the measure of all things in regatta sport. The winner of the Admiral's Cup in 1973 is now a cruising boat in Holland

In 1973, the "Saudade", owned and skippered by Albert Büll from Hamburg, won the 1973 Admiral's Cup. The ship, known as the "red sow" because of its fiery red colour, had thus written a piece of German sporting history. For the first time, a team from Germany had succeeded in winning one of the most important honours in international ocean sailing.

The "Saudade" was then sold to the USA and served as a training ship for offshore training in sunny California. In 2008, Dutchman Jan Palmboom took over the S&S design, converted it into a cruising yacht and brought it back to Europe. Today, the "Saudade" is no longer red, but white, and is mostly sailing on the Dutch IJsselmeer.
